Whether it’s smartwatches, fitness trackers or even apparel, the tech you can wear to keep tabs on your fitness levels is more popular than ever. But with so many fitness gadgets on the market, it’s hard to separate the good from the not-so-good.

If you don’t trust strapping expensive wearables to yourself before plunging head first into fitness – where there’s a risk you could lose them, never to be seen again – there’s always the option of “invisible” wearable tech. Take the
Under Armour Gemini 3 RE smart shoes, for instance. The sports apparel company has integrated a fitness tracker right into the soles of the shoes, so you don’t need to adorn a smartwatch to record your fitness data. Being the most intelligent trainers you’ll ever slip your feet into, they boast an accelerometer to record running metrics and Bluetooth connectivity that saves it all to an app afterwards. And they’re great for pre-event training, too, as they engage you in a pre-run jump test that measures how ready your body is to run.

Skagen Hybrid Smartwatch – Signatur Steel-Mesh

Available from Skagen

Skagen

Skagen’s Hybrid device is the perfect smartwatch for those that don’t want their wrist wear to look like an activity tracker

If you want something that looks a little classier than your bog standard smartwatch, that also doesn’t look like a smartwatch, then Skagen is the company to check out. The firm specializes in smart devices that don’t look at all smart, but that’s the smart thing about them.

The Signatur Connected hybrid smartwatch is an elegant piece of wrist wear tracks basic activities automatically, and synchronizes with your smartphone, be it iOS or Android, for metrics that help you stay motivated. It runs on a standard replaceable CR2430 coin-cell battery and the strap can be easily interchanged with other 20mm straps. A great, sophisticated wearable for those that want a little more elegant fitness tracker.

Fitbit Alta HR

The FitBit Alta HR can not only measure your sleep but tell you what you need to do to improve it

Fitbit’s latest wrist-wear offering welcomes some impressive updates, such as a much slimmer design when compared to the Fitbit Charge 2, for example. However, the Alta HR isn’t just about measuring daily exercise. Its primary focus is measuring and improving sleep, working alongside fresh innovations called Sleep Stages and Sleep Insight, which the firm touts as “a new advance in sleep tracking tech”.

Developed with leading sleep experts from Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University and the University of Arizona, Sleep Stages is powered by Fitbit’s PurePulse heart rate technology, which analyses heart rate variability to estimate the amount of time you spend in light, deep and REM sleep, as well as time awake each night, to better understand your sleep quality. Sleep Insights then uses this data to provide personalized guidance on how to improve your sleep for better overall health.

Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro

Available from Samsung

Lee Bell

The Gear Fit 2 Pro features a nice clean and vibrant 1.5-inch display

The Gear Fit 2 Pro is one of my favorite activity trackers. It doesn’t try to be a smartwatch; it’s a simple activity tracker but comes with a host of features, including a ultra-detailed super AMOLED display. It boasts a continuous heart rate monitor, along with a pedometer, an exercise tracker and a stopwatch and timer. It also has a 5 atm water resistance rating, compared to the IP68 water resistance rating for the older Gear Fit 2, meaning it should be even more robust for proper sports use, especially swimming. A nice, slim wearable for those looking for a fitness-focused device without all the fancy extras that you might not ever use.
